We’ve seen stuff! Really!
Much of the TV we usually watch is either on hiatus or about to disappear on summer break so this month, Colleen, Dale (Letterboxd) and I (Letterboxd) touch base on a couple of finales, share thoughts on some recently seen movies, books and the usual rundown of podcasts!

Perfect Blue, but it wasn’t by Mamoru Oshii. I still need to see it. I’ve been sitting on it for years.
Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence is great and worth seeing. Though, it’s mostly about Batou. I love the theme and it adds to the themes of the original. Laughing Man is also great, but it’s a shortened movie version of Stand Alone Complex Season 1 or 2. The plots are so convoluted and intricate in these films/tv shows. But the concepts and themes are way ahead of its time. And of course, the visuals are amazing.
Perfect Blue is Satoshi Kon, and it’s a goddamn masterpiece (Although Paprika is even BETTER!) It’s too bad Kon died so young, he would have had so many for gifts for us.
A lot of people cite Perfect Blue as Darren Aronofsky’s influence on Black Swan (which he dubiously claims to deny), but I see a greater parallel with Mulholland Drive. Nolan must’ve been influenced by Paprika for Inception though. Unfortunately, those are the only 2 Satoshi Kon movies I’ve seen.
Ironically, I haven’t seen the original Ghost In The Shell movie but really enjoyed the Stand Alone Complex series. Has anyone bothered to watch the GITS: Arise films? I find it so disconnected from the original canon that I haven’t finished them.
The Paprika as a template for Inception is 100% fact. Nolan has mentioned it several times in interviews.
Also, Aronofsky hasn’t denied Perfect Blue as a constant major influence. He licensed the rights to the film just so he could use the shot in the bath-tub in Requiem for A Dream.
But the more obvious source for Black Swan is Powell&Pressburger’s The Red Shoes.
I caught the first 3 GITS Arise episodes or films on Netflix and I forgot them already. I remember liking them, but I thought it’s an unnecessary origin story. I’m about to watch the New Movie. Crossing my fingers.
Yes! I realized that *after* the fact
