After the Credits Episode 198: VIFF Dispatch #3

viff2016

That’s a wrap! VIFF has come and gone in a whirlwind. It’s hard to believe two weeks of movie watching is already gone and though this year I didn’t manage to see quite as many movies as I’d hoped for, I mainly managed to make good choices and didn’t see too much I didn’t like.

In this final dispatch from the festival I’m (@themarina) joined by regular festival correspondent Bill Harris (@soundjam69) of Green Screen of Death, and friend of the show Lisa (who has appeared on our last few VIFF wrap shows) to count down our favourite movies of the festival.

We actually recorded this show earlier this week but things have been so crazy, it’s only going up today. Lucky for you, the festival is almost over at this point so we’ll be returning to our regularly scheduling posting in the coming weeks. Anywho…

In this dispatch, I’m (@themarina) joined by festival corespondent Bill Harris (@soundjam69) of the Green Screen of Death to talk about some more movies.

We’ll be coming at you with one final show in the coming days to wrap up the fest and count down our favorite films. Until then, be sure to follow-us on twitter, follow the festival hashtag #VIFF and check out the festival website for screening information – VIFF repeats have been announced and screenings will continue into next week!

Festival season has officially landed in Vancouver with the kick-off of the Vancouver International Film Festival last week.

As has become tradition, I’m ((@themarina) joined for our first dispatch from the festival by Bill Harris (@soundjam69) who is now also part of a really awesome podcast we’ve talked about in the past Green Screen of Death.

The intent was for this to be posted yesterday so it’s already a day late however, most of the discussion is still relevant as some of these movies are screening again over the next week + left of the festival, and because talking about movies just never really gets old.

We’ll be coming at you with another dispatch after the weekend of heavy movie watching but until then, be sure to follow-us on twitter, follow the festival hashtag #VIFF and check out the festival website for screening information.

Andrea Arnold FTW. Every. Single. Time.
Andrea Arnold FTW. Every. Single. Time.

Chalk this up to a cautionary tale. When Dale (Letterboxd), Colleen and I (Letterboxd) gathered last week to record this show, IMDb seemed to be having some sort of crisis of database management, showing movies that were already out as new releases and leaving out a bunch of other titles. This week, the glitch seems to have been fixed but as a result, we missed a number of titles which are (apparently) opening this month.

If anyone out there can recommend another release schedule which may be more accurate, please let us know. As for this episode… the movies we DID talk about are listed below.

Girls on Pop – Episode 8: Oh the Music!

The hero we need right now?
The hero we need right now?

We recorded this show during the final days of the Olympics last week and our recording was shortly preempted by a break to watch the relay race which leads us to kick things off this week with a bit of discussion of one of the biggest events in the world before Sarah (@iBrockely) and I (@themarina) dig into some talk about entertainment news and happenings including a couple of new trailers and some deep discussion on the future of the DC Extended Universe.

Give us more!
Give us more!

It doesn’t happen very often but on this month’s episode of the Media Spew, we all happened to watch the same show. Yes, as with everyone else, Colleen, Dale (Letterboxd) and I (Letterboxd) all manged to get sucked into the cult of “Stranger Things.”

Aside from Netflix, we also caught up with a great assortment of movies, both new and old. Listen in for all the goodness!

Harley Quinn FTW
Harley Quinn FTW

Summer movie season is coming to an end and August is a perfect encapsulation of that fact: a mix of last minute tentpole releases with a mix of indie fare that marks the end of one festival season and the beginning of another.

Coleen returns this month to join Dale (Letterboxd) and I (Letterboxd) as we look ahead to the interesting mix of titles being released in August which includes a handful of great looking but poorly titled releases.

Dale also introduces his new project, a storytelling show called Terminal City Tales which you can check out here.

Girls on Pop – Episode 7: SDCC Madness

Glorious
OMG. OMG. OMG.

It may have sprung on me out of no-where but there’s no question that when SDCC kicked off late last week, I heard it all the way up in Vancouver – as did everyone else connected to the internet all over the world. I mean, did Netflix steal opening day or what?

Oh yeah, then DC came along and obliterated it with a trailer for this little movie they have coming out next year. I think it’s called Wonder Woman???

This week Sarah (@iBrockely) and I (@themarina) dig into some of the offerings unveiled at SDCC; from new trailers for stuff we were already excited about to “big” announcements that rocked the convention and geekdom in general.

Girls on Pop – Episode 6: MIA: Summer Movie Season Girls on Pop – Episode 3: The Last Hoorah

Logan & Veronica 4 Ever!
Logan & Veronica 4 Ever!

For the last few decades, summer movie season promised at least a dozen movies of varying degrees of awesome and featuring ridiculous plots, loads of action and maybe even a couple of end-of-the-world scenarios but this summer is proving to be a huge disappointment. Where have the summer movies gone?

This week Sarah (@iBrockely) and I (@themarina) talk Finding Dory, delve into the discussion of the missing summer movies and get a little deep with the current culture of what Marina dubs “Peter Pan Syndrome.”

SPOILER WARNING! We get spoilery with the Now You See Me 2 discussion but nobody cared about that movie and frankly, neither should you. Still, if you plan on seeing it down the road and don’t want to be spoiled on the details, you might want to skip ahead a few minutes once that discussion starts. It’s pretty short.

Outcast; a possession thriller done right
Outcast; a possession thriller done right

Colleen is still MIA (something to do with a job that is making her super tired) so Dale (Letterboxd) and I (Letterboxd) forge ahead without her to talk about some of the stuff we’ve been enjoying of late – from the tube and all the great stuff currently on TV to what we’ve been reading and listening to.
